BMW Rules Out Supercar For Centenary Next Year

For quite some time, rumours have been circulating that for BMW's centenary celebrations next year, the German automaker will unveil a high-performance supercar to sit above the i8 in its range. Unfortunately for those wishful thinkers that thought such a car would become a reality, it seems unlikely that it will. While recently speaking with German publication AMS, BMW's development boss Klaus Frohlich revealed that the company won't in fact launch a so-called “super sports car” utilising either a V8 or V10 engine. As we've come to expect from high-placed automotive executives, Frolich failed to rule out the possibility of a new BMW supercar altogether. He hinted that an all-electric sports car or even an electric supercar could eventually be produced by the automaker. However, due to the current limitations with battery technology, particularly their heavy weight, such a vehicle is still quite a few years away from ever becoming a reality. Even though a new supercar won't be revealed by BMW next year, the company's future is still looking bright. It is currently developing a third model for the current BMW i range of vehicles, expected to take the shape of a small sedan to rival the Tesla Model 3 and dubbed the i5. Additionally, BMW is continuing to develop its advanced hydrogen fuel cell technologies which will debut on a production car sometime after 2020.
