Volvo S90 Coupe Hinted By Company Exec For 2020
Volvo may have just pulled the wraps of the new S90, but the company has big plans for its flagship sedan, which should be produced in more body styles.
We already know that the Volvo S90 will also come as an estate, the V90, from the leaked scale models of the past few weeks, but what we didn’t know is that the Swedish-based brand wants to take things even further away.
Talking to AutoExpress at the S90 reveal event in Gothenburg, Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's senior vice president of design, hinted towards a possible coupe version. This will be based on the same SPA architecture and it should borrow its lines from the Concept Coupe, revealed a couple of years ago.
The report suggests that the future S90 Coupe will start from around £40,000 (~$60,000) and it would rival the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and BMW 6-Series Coupe. The model S90 four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, along with the T8 plug-in hybrid, are there for the taking and an all-electric version is not excluded either.
The next "logical step" with the flagship model should be the addition of a drop-top version, which will take on the convertible variants of the aforementioned competitors.
The Volvo official continued to talk about the future vehicle lineup, which will be rolled off by the end of the decade, mentioning the "90 cluster", the "60 cluster" and the XC40 as well.
"First we'll roll out the 90 cluster, then we'll roll out the 60 cluster. Then even that new product - and as everyone knows by now, an XC40 as well. All this we want to manage within a four-year period."
The company's fans should not wait for anything bigger than the current S90, because the automaker has no plans to offer a rival for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and others "players" in the large executive saloon segment.
